I paint with the emotional feeling I have about the subject, applying texture, colour gradations, and working towards depth, more than the eye sees at first glance. Creativity happens when at some point, my own unique vision works together with the painting itself leading the way to completion. Often this becomes an abstract.

“To paint is to celebrate life”

Barbara Salonen Fox

It is with passion that I paint the beauty in our country Canada, with all its lakes, rivers, trees, mountains, wildflowers, and gardens.  Similarly, I love drawing from the live model, the human form, as well as painting people in our daily life.

THE ARTIST

BARBARA SALONEN FOX was born in Vancouver, B.C., and at 22 years old, moved to Montreal where she resided until she passed in 2021.

Painting was Barbara’s passion all her life, beginning early, before any formal training. Art classes began at 11 years old at the Vancouver Art Gallery, followed by the Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr University of Art and Design), and later after moving to Montreal at l’École des Beaux-arts de Montreal.

She visualized paintings everywhere she went, stemming from her love of nature, her enjoyment in seeing people on the streets, or her desire to express the intangibles not seen with the naked eye. Her main focus early on was to paint from nature, inspired by the beauty of Canada’s landscapes, trees, gardens, water and wildflowers. She also painted semi-abstract and abstract works which represented her introspective thoughts about music, ancient and worldly influences, and spirituality.

Barbara employed several different painting media for her work,  from oil-paint on canvas, to acrylic, to watercolour, and mixed media, benefitting from the unique properties of each.
